Jane Doe is a Bristol-based sculptor, renowned for crafting forms that tell a story of everyday life.

Originally trained in painting at the Royal College of Art, Jane turned to sculpture after feeling frustrated by the 2D nature of her still-life paintings. She longed to bring movement and energy into her work – something she found she was able to achieve by incorporating modelling, painting, carving and other finishes into her sculptures.

In looking for inspiration, Jane turns to the minutiae of her own life. She says: “Some artists go in search of their muse. I find it in the shape my hand makes when I hold a coffee cup or the form of two people on a sofa watching TV. Everything I do is inspired by the small, beautiful details of life that so often get forgotten.”

Jane’s sculptural practice brings together the worlds of fine art and the textures of the everyday. The often doll-like forms of her sculptures, with their exquisite lines and painted features, are contrasted with the wrappers, paper, and postcards she dresses them with.

Jane has exhibited her work internationally, including in Paris, Nimes, Rome and Vienna. She always regularly exhibits in community spaces in her home town of Bristol, where she works to inspire a new generation of young people to explore sculpture as a mode of self-expression.

In July 2019, Jane Doe will be exhibiting her latest collection, ‘Kettle Black’, at Vienna’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary. The exhibition observes our morning routines from different perspectives, shining a light on our everyday practices and rituals.
