The Map House, London
An exhibition exploring 300 years of attempts to map the moon, planets and stars has opened at The Map House in London.
Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic lunar landing, The Mapping of the Moon: 1669-1969brings together beautifully realised celestial cartography, alongside artefacts and memorabilia, including items signed by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell.
The Map House is said to be the world’s oldest antiquarian map seller. Founded in 1907, it originally acted as a publisher and seller of maps, and received a Royal Warrant to supply maps of the Western Front during the First World War.
- Jean Baptist Homann: “Tabula Selenographica”. Published 1710
- Hans Schwarzenbach / Hallwag: “Der Mond, La Lune, The Moon, La Luna”. Published 1969
Exhibition runs 21st June until 21st August 2019 at The Map House, 54 Beauchamp Place, London SW3 1NY.
